Cognac’s transformation from a traditional French eau-de-vie into a global cultural icon owes much to an unexpected but enduring partnership with rap and hip-hop. This talk explores how cognac producers—long accustomed to navigating dual luxury and mass markets—successfully embraced African-American consumers and hip-hop artists as authentic cultural ambassadors rather than resisting them. Tracing the relationship from its roots in the presence of Black American soldiers and musicians in France to its explosion in late-20th-century rap lyrics, advertising, and celebrity endorsements, the presentation examines how brands such as Hennessy, Courvoisier, Rémy Martin, and D’Ussé reshaped their image through music, fashion, and popular culture.
